BREAKING: SHOOTING IN ARLINGTON LEADS TO ARREST, ONE INJURED

BREAKING: OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN ARLINGTON FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP

ARLINGTON, Neb. (Updated at 7:18 PM) — A man was airlifted to a Fremont hospital Monday afternoon following a shootout with law enforcement that began as a routine traffic stop in Arlington.

From a KETV interview, Washington County Sheriff, Mike Robinson, said, “At approximately 2:07 PM this afternoon, deputies initiated a traffic stop on that vehicle. The female driver was arrested, for a traffic violation. She was moved from the scene. The male passenger had a felony warrant for his arrest. At which point he was removed from the vehicle. He came out with a handgun, and fired numerous shots at the officers who were left at the scene. Officers returned fire, and he was struck. And, he was later transferred to UNMC by helicopter.”

Sheriff Robinson added, “At this point the State Patrol is doing the shooting investigation, and they’ll release more information tomorrow.”

According to the Washington County Sheriff, the incident began when a deputy initiated a traffic stop near 100 Eagle Street after recognizing the driver as someone with a suspended license. The situation escalated when a male passenger, who authorities later confirmed had an active felony warrant in Douglas County, refused to comply with deputies’ instructions. The man was reportedly armed with a weapon in his waistband.

Witnesses described a brief standoff as law enforcement commanded the man to exit the vehicle after the female driver had stepped out. The situation turned violent when the man allegedly fired several shots from inside the vehicle and attempted to flee. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect.

The injured man was transported by ambulance to the Arlington fairgrounds, where a LifeNet medical helicopter transported him to a Fremont hospital. Emergency services also evaluated an infant who was present at the scene.

The incident drew a significant law enforcement response, including SWAT teams and multiple units from neighboring jurisdictions. Several roads were temporarily closed, affecting access to nearby areas including the Thompson Apartments.

The female driver was taken into custody at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol will be investigating the shooting.
