I spoke with Adam Gotschall about his re-election campaign for the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors. His responses revealed both significant achievements and a clear vision for MCC’s future.
BLAIRTODAY: What do you consider your most significant achievement on the Board of Governors?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “During my current term since 2021, my most significant achievement on the Board of Governors has been the implementation of the Student Success Initiative (the path forward program), which focuses on enhancing academic support services. This initiative has directly benefited MCC students by providing tutoring, mentoring, and career counseling, resulting in improved retention rates and student performance.”
BLAIRTODAY: Can you tell us more about your expansion efforts in Washington County?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “When I ran for this position in 2020, one of my objectives was to expand post secondary education in Washington County with an emphasis of replacing Dana College. When I set out on this adventure, there were only about 20-30 high school students enrolled in dual enrollment in Blair. Now I’m happy to say that we have over 500 students (both high school and adults) enrolled in classes in Blair. We’ve opened up a new welding and fabrication program, and do training at Woodhouse in Blair. We’ve expanded our partnerships in the agricultural industry, healthcare, automotive, and other industries. I’m looking forward to what is in store for our community moving forward.”
BLAIRTODAY: How has your background in public service shaped your approach to education?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “As a mail carrier and education board member, my public service experience gives me a unique perspective on community college education. I understand the importance of accessible education for all members of our community, and I advocate for programs that cater to diverse needs, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed academically and professionally.”
BLAIRTODAY: You’ve received endorsements from both labor unions and Republican organizations. How do you balance these diverse constituencies?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “Balancing endorsements from labor unions and Republican organizations requires open communication and a commitment to common goals. I strive to consider the needs and perspectives of both groups, seeking solutions that promote workforce development and community growth, while ensuring that our decisions reflect the best interests of all stakeholders.”
BLAIRTODAY: What challenges do you see facing MCC over the next four years?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “Over the next four years, MCC will face challenges such as funding constraints and increasing enrollment demands. I propose solutions like enhancing partnerships with local businesses to create job pathways for students and advocating for state funding that reflects our community’s needs, ensuring we can maintain and expand our programs.”
BLAIRTODAY: How do you view the role of community colleges in Nebraska’s workforce development?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “Community colleges play a crucial role in Nebraska’s workforce development by providing relevant training and education. I believe MCC should focus on sectors like healthcare, technology, and skilled trades, aligning our programs with industry needs to ensure that students are prepared for the workforce.”
BLAIRTODAY: What’s your stance on maintaining affordability while ensuring program quality?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “Maintaining affordability while ensuring program quality is vital. I support policies such as increasing access to scholarships and grants, advocating for state funding, and regularly reviewing program outcomes to ensure that we deliver high-quality education that remains affordable for all students.”
BLAIRTODAY: What distinguishes your vision for MCC from your opponent’s?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “My vision for MCC emphasizes a community-centric approach, focusing on inclusivity and collaboration with local industries. Unlike my opponent, I prioritize innovative programs that adapt to changing workforce needs and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all community members. My opponent also flipped her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican right before filing to run against me. I generally don’t get into the practice of tearing down my opponent. However, due to her job and extreme political ideologies, I don’t believe that she will be an all encompassing board member, who serves ALL students and staff in a safe and productive environment.”
BLAIRTODAY: How do you assess MCC’s technical and vocational programs?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “I assess the success of MCC’s technical and vocational programs through student outcomes and employer feedback. There are significant opportunities for expansion, especially in high-demand fields like cybersecurity and renewable energy, where we can provide targeted training that meets industry standards.”
BLAIRTODAY: What role should MCC play in supporting transfer students?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “MCC should play a proactive role in supporting transfer students by establishing strong partnerships with four-year institutions. This includes creating clear transfer pathways, offering advising services, and hosting workshops to prepare students for their next educational steps.”
BLAIRTODAY: What areas need the most attention in the coming term?
ADAM GOTSCHALL: “Based on my experience on the board, areas needing the most attention include enhancing digital resources for students and improving outreach to underrepresented communities. By focusing on these areas, we can ensure that MCC meets the evolving needs of our diverse student population.”
Gotschall enters his re-election campaign with strong backing from both labor and conservative organizations. He has secured endorsements from the Omaha Federation of Labor, Washington County Nebraska Republican Party, and Douglas County Republican Party.
