Blair, our serene small town, was shattered by an unforeseen act of violence last week. Our town’s tranquility has been replaced by the aftershocks of tragedy and an intense manhunt that ended in the arrest of Elijah Logan, a 22-year-old Council Bluffs resident.
The quiet morning of May 12th was shattered when Logan allegedly broke into a home on 10th and Park Street, near Blair High School. Inside the residence was Samantha Ely, her infant child, and her brother, Jordan Ely. Samantha, the mother of Logan’s child, was shot multiple times in the legs. Her brother, Jordan, was tragically shot and killed in the altercation.
Logan then fled the scene, embarking on a four-day run from the law. According to detectives, he had parked in an alley behind the home and made his escape in a green Jeep SUV, a key detail that helped law enforcement in their pursuit.
After an intense manhunt that spanned multiple jurisdictions, Logan turned himself in to the Metro Fugitive Task Force at 2:39 pm on May 15th, near 24th and Camden Avenue in Omaha. As the news of Logan’s surrender spread, relief washed over the Blair community, allowing them to begin the process of healing and seeking justice.
A warrant for Logan’s arrest had been issued on charges of first-degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony. Blair Police now anticipate an additional charge of homicide to be added. Logan is currently held in Washington County jail, awaiting further legal proceedings.
In the face of this tragedy, the Ely family has shown remarkable strength. Samantha is expected to recover from her injuries, while her infant child remains unharmed. A GoFundMe has been set up to cover Jordan’s funeral expenses and the family told local news outlets that Jordan died a hero, trying to protect his sister and his nephew.
The Blair Police Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshal Service, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Omaha Police Department, Council Bluffs Police Department and Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, played an instrumental role in the swift capture of the suspect. Their relentless pursuit stands as a testament to the power of community and inter-agency collaboration in the face of adversity.
The violent event has certainly left a scar on the tight-knit community of Blair. The town, known more for its corn harvest than violent crime, is grappling with the aftershocks of the tragedy.
