Every year, when Washington County Bank begins to post the number of days til spring on their sign, a few things happen.
First, I think, “60 days seems like a long time.” Then, somewhere around “45 days left,” I remark to my wife, “I just seemed like yesterday we were at 60 days, boy, time is moving fast,” and then there’s the “reminder” day (or days) like what is forecast for the next week.
According to the multiple weather sources we analyzed for this story, the lows for Blair this week will be historic:
To be clear, this cold is historic, dangerous, and rare. Does it get cold in February? Yes. Does it get below -10 degrees (include -18) usually? No. The all-time low was only 8 degrees colder back in 1899.
-18 is cold.
Since I’ve lived in Blair (2003), this will be the most wicked cold snap I’ve ever seen. We’ve had more snow (2009, 2010, 2011) by a large margin. But, this cold, and these many days in a row?
No.
So, stay inside when you can. Keep your pets safe, too. If you have to drive carry hand warmers, keep your car fueled up, and phone fully charged. And, remember…
It’s only 32 days til spring.
