The second significant winter weather event of February is taking aim at eastern Nebraska, with Blair positioned along the northern edge of the most impactful snow.

  • TIMING IS CRUCIAL: While light snow may begin after 7 PM Tuesday, the most impactful period will be overnight through Wednesday morning’s commute. The heaviest snow rates are expected between 2-5 AM Wednesday, with dangerous travel conditions lasting through Wednesday evening.
  • DANGEROUS COLD FOLLOWS: After the snow ends Wednesday evening, temperatures will plummet to around -7°F by Thursday morning, with wind chills between -15°F and -20°F. This arctic blast could be more dangerous than the snow itself.
  • LOCATION MATTERS: Blair sits on the northern edge of the heaviest snow band, with 2-4 inches expected. However, being so close to the Winter Storm Warning area (where 4-6 inches are forecast), amounts could trend higher if the storm system shifts slightly north.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Blair and Washington County from 6 PM Tuesday through 6 PM Wednesday, as a winter storm system moves into eastern Nebraska. The National Weather Service expects 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation, though higher amounts are possible given Blair’s proximity to areas under a Winter Storm Warning.

While areas just south of Blair, including Omaha and Lincoln, are under a Winter Storm Warning for 4-6 inches of snow, Blair’s position on the northern edge of the system means slightly lower amounts are expected.

Snow is expected to begin developing in the Blair area after 7 PM Tuesday, initially light but becoming steadier overnight. The most significant snowfall is forecast between midnight and Wednesday morning, potentially creating hazardous conditions for the Wednesday morning commute.

“Travel will be impacted Wednesday, particularly during both morning and evening commute times,” warns the National Weather Service. “Plan on slippery road conditions.”

Temperatures will remain very cold throughout the event, with overnight lows around 7°F and wind chills below zero. These cold temperatures mean snow will stick to roads immediately upon falling, making travel increasingly difficult as the storm progresses.

Hour-by-hour forecasts show visibility dropping to around one mile or less during the heaviest snow periods, particularly between 2 AM and 5 AM Wednesday when snowfall rates may peak.

Following the snow, an arctic blast will bring dangerous cold to the area. Thursday morning temperatures are expected to plunge to around -7°F, with wind chills between -15 and -20°F.

Residents are advised to:

  • Limit travel if possible during the height of the storm
  • Keep emergency supplies in vehicles if travel is necessary
  • Call 511 for the latest road conditions
  • Prepare for dangerous cold following the snow +- Consider adjusting Wednesday morning commute times +- Keep cell phones fully charged in case of emergency+

The storm comes as the region has been experiencing notably dry conditions, with meteorologists noting the area is in need of moisture. Another round of snow is possible Friday night into Saturday, suggesting an active winter pattern is developing.

Local schools and businesses should monitor conditions closely, as the timing of the heaviest snow during the Wednesday morning commute could impact operations.

Residents should continue to monitor local forecasts as snow amounts could vary significantly across short distances, with areas just south of Blair potentially receiving higher amounts under the Winter Storm Warning.

The National Weather Service will continue to update forecasts as the system develops, and any changes to expected snow amounts or timing will be issued as needed.
